Color Management Workflows

Color Management | Posted by Karl Elchinger | April 2009

A lot of the workflow you choose will depend on the type of work you do. School and Sports photographers may not need to retouch their photos as much as portrait and wedding photographers so their workflow will be different. Also, shooting in RAW versus JPG will affect your workflow. To further complicate the matter, the type and number of print media you use will affect your workflow...

Single Output Destinations: Photographers primarily using only one type of output only, like prints, gallery wraps or fine art paper, should follow one of these workflows...

Sports Workflow:

  • 1) Capture in JPG with sRGB profile embedded in capture
  • 2) Soft proof with our proofing profile and edit files as necessary
  • 3) Send to print at lab

Portrait Workflow:

  • 1) Capture in RAW
  • 2) Edit as necessary using your preferred RAW file editing program
  • 3) Convert to JPG, apply sRGB profile upon save
  • 4) Soft proof files using our proofing profile and edit as necessary
  • 5) Send to print at lab

Printing with Multiple Output Destinations: Photographers who print on more than one media type should soft proof using the appropriate profiles for each media type. Organizing your files will become important as each media will have a different correction based on the profile used. Follow the portrait workflow listed above, however, sort your files into subdirectories to make ordering easier: Naming your files with specific information about media type or profiles will also help organize your files and streamline your workflow.

Recap

Color Management | Posted by Karl Elchinger | March 2009

Since August, many aspects of color management have been discussed. From capture to print, you have learned how to produce consistent and predictable prints. This month we will review all of these topics and, next month, build them into several possible workflows...

Capture is the most crucial step in the entire process. Good exposure and accurate white balance have a much greater impact on the final print than good color management. If you do not have a calibrated monitor, you can still stay relatively assured that your images are pretty accurate before sending them to print. It is recommended, however, to order Lab Corrected prints to be sure your prints do look as good as possible.

Controlling exposure will save you hours of work correcting your images if you do have a calibrated monitor, which is the next most important point in the process. While it is possible to calibrate a monitor by eye, it is definitely not recommended. Using a quality calibrator and accompanying software will guarantee accuracy. Remember that it may take a few tries to get a good calibration, though. If the image on your monitor displays differently than your test prints, recalibrate with different settings.

Once you have a calibrated monitor you can effectively soft proof in Photoshop. You will have to download and install our soft proofing profiles from the color management section on our website. When installed, you will be able to select them from the Proof Setup window in Photoshop, remember to choose the Perceptual rendering intent as well. With soft proofing enabled, color correct your images to your liking. Make sure not to convert or assign the soft proofing profile at any point in process. You will want to assign an intermediate profile like sRGB or AdobeRGB (1998) if your image does not already have a profile attached. If the image has another profile attached already, convert it to one of the two aforementioned. When converting, experiment with rendering intents to see how they affect image appearance and choose which looks best to you.

Rendering Intents

Color Management | Posted by Karl Elchinger | February 2009

In the last few tips, profiles have been the main focus. We have learned what they are and how to apply them in a color managed workflow. The last significant factor with profiles is dealing with out-of-gamut colors when converting profiles. When soft proofing and converting profiles, there is an option for Rendering Intent...

Rendering Intents deal with out-of-gamut colors when converting from a source profile to a destination profile. Remember that printers cannot reproduce the same gamut as computer monitors, so it is necessary to have a way to deal with the out-of-gamut colors. There are four choices when converting these colors:

The Perceptual Intent keeps the overall image appearance similar between source and destination profiles. It accomplishes this by moving both out-of-gamut and in gamut colors to preserve the overall relationships. This is the best option for images with large amounts of out-of-gamut colors.

The Relative Colorimetric Intent only affects out-of-gamut colors and preserves in gamut colors. This choice is good for most images because it will not change in gamut colors.

The last two intents, Absolute Colorimetric and Saturation, are used only in specific situations and not in everyday conversions. Absolute Colorimetric is used primarily for proofing one device on another, different device. Saturation is used when there is little concern for accurate color as it saturates all colors.

Rendering Intents are used whenever a profile is converted, therefore, it is extremely important to choose the appropriate intent otherwise your output may look different than expected. To see whether you have significant areas of out-of-gamut color in your images (in Photoshop), click on View > Gamut Warning (or press Shift + Ctrl + Y). This will shade out-of-gamut colors grey and you can determine whether it will be best to use either the Perceptual or Relative Colorimetric rendering intent.

Converting & Assigning Profiles in Photoshop®

Color Management | Posted by Karl Elchinger | January 2009

In order to successfully process an image from capture to print, you must know how to handle profiles in your editing software. PhotoshopÕs terminology can be a bit confusing. The options to convert or assign profiles to images may sometimes be misapplied and cause unpredictable results. Both choices for handling profile conversions have their own specific uses. Applying the correct tool at the correct time will allow you to get the great looking prints you want...

Assigning profiles applies mostly to opening images that do not already have a profile embedded such as scanned images. If you have an input profile for your scanner you would assign that profile to your image when you open it in Photoshop. Some digital cameras do not attach profiles to images, so you will want to assign an intermediate ÒeditingÓ profile such as sRGB or AdobeRGB(1998). Photoshop does not alter the color numbers that make up the image when assigning a profile to an image. It will keep color numbers the same, which can alter the way the image appears in a different color space. This may seem counterintuitive, but remember that profiles provide actual meaning to color numbers.

Converting to profiles assumes you already have a profile embedded in your image and you want to move to another profile space without altering your imageÕs appearance. When converting profiles, the color numbers that make up your image will most likely change, but it will still look the same in the new color space. To continue the example from above, once you have assigned an input profile to your image, you would use the Convert option to move from your input profile to an intermediate color space.

You can find these options in the following locations: Photoshop CS and earlier: Image > Mode> Convert to ProfileÉ or Assign ProfileÉ Photoshop CS2 and later: Edit> Convert to ProfileÉ or Assign ProfileÉ

It bears repeating that the misapplication of these tools can produce quite undesirable results. Knowledge of how to properly assign and convert profiles is essential to overall color management comprehension.

Profiles

Color Management | Posted by Jason Cosby | December 2008

What are profiles, what do they do, and how do they affect the way my images turn out when printed? At their base, profiles interpret color numbers into visual representations of color. It may seem counterintuitive, but one set of RGB values can produce very different colors depending on the profile used to describe the values....

Colors are combinations of red, green, and blue or cyan, magenta, yellow, and black values. The numbers show how much of each color channel are used to make that color. In a perfect world, these numbers would be reproducible in all formats. However, printers cannot output as wide a gamut as monitors can display. One of the jobs of profiles is to map the relationships between devices like monitors and printers.

Different types of profiles are used for different devices. Scanners and cameras use input profiles; printers and presses use output profiles, and monitors use display profiles. There are also device independent profiles, which will be discussed later.

Output devices have characteristics which must be described accurately Ð this is another job for profiles. For example, if you have two of the exact same printers, most likely they will not produce matching prints from the same file, especially if they are using different inks and paper. In order to make the printers, inks and paper all match, you must profile them. In this case, you would have to print out a set of color targets from special software, measure them with a spectrophotometer, and use more special software to generate a profile. This can be a difficult and tedious process which is why we do it for you.

Scanners use profiles to accurately reproduce printed images as digital images. The profile for a scanner would describe the light source used to illuminate the image while scanning. It is difficult and impractical to profile cameras, so most attach device independent profiles directly to images.

Monitors are much easier to calibrate, refer to the September tip of the month to find out more.

The information gathered from calibrating and profiling describes a deviceÕs gamut, dynamic range, and tonal reproduction characteristics. Gamut is the range of color reproduced, and dynamic range describes the whitest white to the blackest black. Tonal reproduction measures how certain colors shift when reproduced. These characteristics all change when different printers, inks and papers are used; again, this is why profiles are necessary.

Device independent profiles, as their name suggests, are color spaces that do not describe devices. They simply describe color (in other words, they give color meaning to color numbers). AdobeRGB(1998), sRGB, ProPhoto, and CIE Lab are device independent profiles. When attached to an image, they will give accurate representation to the numbers that comprise the image.

There are specific ways profiles must be used in order to achieve accurate color. Be sure to look for the Assigning and Converting Profiles tip next month.

Sizing Images for Print

File Management | Posted by Jason Cosby | November 2008

Modern camera sensors are able to capture more than 20 megapixels of information that can produce incredibly large files. The resolution from such a camera can reach 5,616 x 3,744 pixels, which equates to a 12x18Ó print at 300dpi. The size of this file would be about 60 Mb as an uncompressed TIF or a mere 9 Mb as a JPG...

There are many benefits to pre-sizing your images for print. The greatest benefit is that your upload time will be drastically reduced thus freeing up your internet connection more quickly. Also, the risk of transfer errors is diminished. We strongly recommend saving a backup of your original files for future use and resizing copies of the originals for printing.

Resizing files individually can be time intensive, so Photoshop and other programs have integrated batch processing features that can automatically resize groups of images to any specified size. The general rule of thumb is to resize your images to your desired print size at 300dpi. A typical 8x10 at 300dpi saved as a JPG will be 3 to 4 Mb. Our printers are able to produce good quality prints as low as 200dpi, if necessary. Lowering the resolution to 200dpi nearly doubles your potential print size if your native file size isnÕt big enough to make large prints at 300dpi.

Soft Proofing in Adobe Photoshop®

Color Management | Posted by Jason Cosby | October 2008

Most monitors display a wider spectrum of color than printers can recreate. Therefore, it is necessary to limit your monitorÕs display to simulate the printerÕs output - in other words, soft proof. In order to soft proof, you will need a soft proofing profile and software that is able to read and apply the profile, like Adobe Photoshop. Refer to your specific operating systemÕs instructions or our online color guide on how to install profiles...

Soft proofing relies on having a calibrated monitor. It will do no good to soft proof on an uncalibrated monitor because the display is already inaccurate. It is important to know that soft proofing profiles should not be attached to your images, they are only used for display purposes and not printing.

To set up our soft proofing profile in Photoshop, go to View > Proof Setup > Custom and select RichmondCamera_Softproofing_3-07.icc from the first drop down box labeled Device to Simulate. Set the Rendering Intent to Perceptual, check the Preview box but leave all other boxes unchecked. Click Save and you will able to quickly pull up this setting for future use.

Bring your image into Photoshop and make any necessary edits. Since out of gamut colors cause a shift in image appearance, check the gamut warning by clicking View > Gamut Warning (Shift + Ctrl + Y). This will shade out-of-gamut colors in grey. If no grey appears, your image is ready for print; however, if any grey shows up, you will need to soft proof.

To toggle soft proofing click Ctrl + Y on the keyboard. Your image is displayed using the soft proofing profile, giving you an accurate representation of how your image will appear in print. You may notice some colors shifting when you toggle soft proofing on. If they shift too far from the original image, you will need to color correct the image again with the soft proofing profile on and resave.

Monitor Calibration

Color Management | Posted by Jason Cosby | September 2008

After capturing great exposures in camera, calibrating your monitor is the next step in printing great pictures. You will need a quality calibrator, like the X-Rite i1, and accompanying software to achieve an accurate display on your monitor. Adjusting by eye does not produce reliable results...

Allow the monitor to warm up at least fifteen minutes and run the calibration software in its advanced mode. Follow the instructions included with your calibrator to customize the calibration settings and match your monitor to our printer output. Know that the settings we prescribe should be used as starting points for calibrating your monitor; all monitors display color differently depending on their brand, age, video card, and amount of use. Our recommendations are as follows:

Color Temperature: 6000K
Gamma: PC - 2.2,
Gamma: Mac - 1.8
Luminance: LCD - 115 cd/m2,
CRT - 95 cd/m2

These should be used as starting points; unless you are very lucky, you will most likely find that your monitor will not match your prints with these settings. From here, though, you will know how to correct for color imbalances on your monitor. If the image on your monitor displays darker than your print, you will need to recalibrate with a higher luminance value, or vice versa; likewise, if the image on the monitor is too cool, you will need to set a lower Kelvin temperature to make it warmer, or vice versa. Every time a correction is made, the display must be recalibrated. It may take several calibrations with different settings before the monitor matches the prints.

Once you have an accurate calibration, record the settings in the file name of the monitor profile. Here is an example of how the file name might look:

2-28-2008_Monitor_5800_2.2_90.icc (Date)_(Device)_(Kelvin Temperature)_(Gamma)_(Luminance).icc

Monitors' color rendition tends to drift over time, so make sure to calibrate at least once a month to maintain an accurate display.

White Cards & Custom White Balance

Color Management | Posted by Jason Cosby | August 2008

Most digital SLRs have a custom white balance setting which makes it possible for the photographer to compensate for color casts before shooting. Taking advantage of this feature will save hours of work in post production...

To use a white card, take a picture of it in the lighting condition in which you'll be shooting. Set the camera to the custom white balance setting, and it will ask you to choose a picture from the memory card. Select the one with the white card and you're ready to shoot. Each camera has a slighlty different procedure for this, so be sure to consult your Owner's Manual before hand. This one small step will correct many color inaccuracies in final output, freeing a lot of time that could have been spent adjusting the images.

It is important to use a balanced white card, and to replace them about about once a year. Otherwise, the cards can fade and get dirty with use, which can provide an inaccurate reading.
